Letaba
The “Great” Letaba is one of the dominant watercourses to be found in the Kruger Park. With this comes the inevitable fact that water will always attract an abundance of predators and prey. And so it is with Letaba…
The presence of the camp so close to the river is a matter of judgement. The continuous presence of carnivores and other dangerous animals (NB Elephant, Hippo, Buffalo and Crocodiles) “next door” to a human settlement is a constant potential threat. Thus security measures and procedures override any personal wishes that a visitor might have. This restriction has proven to be workable as the management has not had a single complaint from a visitor and there has never been a need to intervene against an animal in the interest of a visitor. Bushbuck and other small antelope are allowed to walk across the lawns and generally wander around without fear.
This said, the facilities at Letaba are world class and cater for a variety of personal preference and pockets. There are twice-daily excursions: one in the early morning when the Land Rover convoy visits the river and again in the afternoon/evening when the open plains beckon. This is normally the time when the cats get onto the hunting trail. Guided private drives (day and night) can be arranged to suit individual preferences. For the birders there is the Matambeni Bird Hide on the Engelhard Dam and various hides set up on the plains.
