Skukuza is not only the biggest rest camp in the Kruger National Park’s (“KNP”) but is also home to the executive headquarters of the South African National Parks Department which is situated on the south bank of the Sabie river. It is, therefore, appropriate that a large number of birds, reptiles and animals can be seen in and around the KNP.
As in the other camps facilities are provided to take visitors on game-viewing excursions that are managed by Park Rangers. They have been fully trained and accredited to be able to identify an amazing number of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects and their knowledge, tracking and interpretative skills are legendary. Rangers are always armed against attack but are very rarely called on to demonstrate their marksmanship. Also, women are increasingly qualifying as rangers.
In venturing outside the gate visitors will be informed about what they are seeing at every step. Private night drives are not permitted but regular nocturnal tours are arranged where one can recognise the various rodents, predators and reptiles.

Awesome Skukuza Wildlife Drives

Skukuza is one of the primary camps in the Kruger National Park. Many of the primary restcamps have refreshment facilities and a collection of tourist attractions such as info facilities & museum exhibitions.

In the north of the Kruger National Park lies the Punda Maria Gate, the farthest, northernmost portal to the Park – and, arguably, the warmest place to visit in summer. The climate, apart from being hot in summer, is distinctly tropical and thunderstorms frequently lash the area in summer. The winters are, generally, warm with the nights being quite cool.

The vegetation is typical savannah grassland on which Buffalo, Impala, Kudu, Elephant, Zebra and many smaller antelope feed while the predators lie in the shade of the Acacia thorn trees… waiting for an opportunity. Most of the hunting by the big cats takes place at night — and night-drives are offered as part of the Parks menu of adventures and experiences. The ever-present wild dogs and Jackals wait patiently for the cats to complete their meal and provide a counterpoint to the tableau.
The birds of the savannah are plentiful and appropriately camouflaged. As usual the monkeys and baboons are on hand to provide somewhat comic relief to the activities of the predators.
Accommodation is up to the normal standards of the SA National Parks and provides the full range of accommodation to suit all preferences and pockets. Provision is made for campers, visitors that would prefer hutted accommodation and, for those who don’t believe in roughing it there are always the five-star suites in the main building. For example, there are six-bed family bungalows, two-bed safari tents, two- and three-bed bungalows, and camping sites for those that enjoy sleeping “under canvas”. The usual high standard of service and ablutions are fully maintained for the benefit and convenience of visitors — who are royally treated.

Luxury Punda Maria Birdwatching Drives

Punda Maria is one of the main camps in the park. All the central camps have bar & a variety of tourist attractions such as information points & a host of other historical exhibits.

The main camps are some of the most visited locations in Kruger National Park and have many of years history, from the times of the nomadic-hunter-gatherers to the present day. Punda Maria , like many of the main rest camps maintains a map, showing the areas of the Punda Maria camp and& various regions of the greater Kruger.

Punda Maria has a good connecting connecting roads surface, making the camp ideal for patrons that want to drive on their own wild-life seeing trips.
